An arson investigation has been opened into a fire that destroyed a vacant home on a Kurtistown agricultural lot Tuesday afternoon, according to a police log.

An arson investigation has been opened into a fire that destroyed a vacant home on a Kurtistown agricultural lot Tuesday afternoon, according to a police log.

According to a written Fire Department statement, eight units responded to the 4:56 p.m. alarm with the first unit arriving on scene at 17-4437 South Road at 5:11 p.m.

Arriving firefighters found the single-story residence fully engulfed in flames. The fire was declared under control at 5:38 p.m. and extinguished at 7:33 p.m.

No one was in the 1,200-square-foot residence and no firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

Property damage was estimated at $120,000. According to county tax records, the five-acre property is owned by National Federal Mortgage Association.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and fire inspectors planned to continue investigating today.
